Jewish Theatre (Teatr Żydowski)
Teatr Żydowski im. Estery Racheli i Idy Kamińskich w Warszawie [Ester Rachel and Ida Kamińska Jewish Theatre in Warsaw] is located in 12/16 Grzybowski square. It is also the Centre of Yiddish Culture and one of two places in Europe where Yiddish appears on stage. It was established in 1950 when a Jewish theatre in Łódź was combined with a Jewish theatre in Wrocław.
Szymon Szurmiej, an outstanding actor and the director of over 50 Jewish theatre classics, has been a director of the theatre for ages. He has been active in many Jewish organizations in Poland and abroad for which he has been honoured on numerous occasions. Actors of the theatre are brilliant artists, distinguished by precision and natural acting ease. Nowadays(like in the old times), in the theatre you can see literary classics, Yiddish theatre classics, as well as cabaret and revue shows whose dancing and musical elements are loved by the audience.
Polish culture has always been close to Jewish culture. So, that theatre is some kind of a dialogue about this important issue.
Teatr Żydowski im. Estery Racheli i Idy Kamińskich w Warszawie is a unique place also because of the atmosphere of the building. Nothing on the outside suggests that intriguing ambiance of the old times which is present inside. The time seems to stop. This old-fashioned area creates an intimate relationship between the theatre and its audience.
It is worth visiting that building to find out about its individual character.
