It’s a scandal: The anatomy of a scandal vol. 2: “Disgrace” by J. M. Coetzee

A lecture by Dorota Semenowicz
The most popular novel of the South African Nobel prize winner J. M. Coetzee was a controversial topic in his homeland. The government accused him of racism. How did the discussions about the book evolve and is its controversial nature related only to South Africa? How does violence function in the text if the key scene is not described at all? What is violence according to the text? While thinking about the influence of the novel, we’ll compare it with pieces of performances which are based on it.

The Symposium

The premiere of Krzysztof Garbaczewski’s play.
It deals with Eros and perhaps with love in some ways. Socrates came barefoot to a feast. It was actually his habit to walk barefoot on sand, when the human thought is still young and not contaminated with human demons. When he was sentenced to death, he didn’t change this habit, he didn’t wear shoes to go in exile. No, he calmly drank poison and walked barefoot on a stone floor. First, his feet became numb. Then, the numbness spread upwards to eventually turn the brain into a death thought. Maybe something was missed there? A chance to not think anymore.

Based on “The Symposium” by Plato
